Railroad museums, steep foothill trails, canyon water, reservoirs, and winter terrain
Pair Union Station and Historic 25th Street in the city, or choose one foothill, canyon, reservoir, or ski-area outing after checking current access. Pineview's open uses are limited by 2026 construction, low water, and harmful-algal-bloom restrictions.
The Utah State Railroad Museum, Eccles Rail Center, Browning collections, cowboy history, and galleries share the depot complex. The surviving station opened in 1924 after the 1923 fire; check current opening days before setting aside time for the interiors.
Walk west to east from the station through the restored railroad-era commercial blocks, then return for lunch or dinner.
The 29th Street approach is about 2.4 miles round trip, but the short mileage hides a difficult, rocky climb. Spring runoff strengthens the waterfall and can make the steep footing slick; summer heat and exposed sections change the effort again.
The Ogden District corridor has several city-edge trailheads, so a short out-and-back is possible without committing to the full foothill traverse. Expect sun, wind, shared bicycle and foot traffic, and little shade; verify the chosen trailhead on the Forest Service page.
State Route 39 reaches the reservoir through a narrow canyon. As of late August 2026, Pelican/Quist remained open, while several beaches, ramps, a trailhead, and part of Pineview West Trail were closed. A harmful algal bloom prohibited swimming, wading, water skiing, and drinking the water; low water also closed Cemetery Point to motorized boats.
Each ski mountain needs a separate ticket, terrain, road, transit, and parking decision. Do not treat both as one hurried resort sampler.
Waterfall Canyon gains elevation quickly on rocky ground. The Bonneville Shoreline Trail crosses the dry city-facing slope through several trailheads, making shorter out-and-backs easier to tailor. Heat, spring mud, snow, ice, runoff, and wildfire restrictions can change either choice.
